Obituary: Richard Allen Nelson

Mr. Richard Allen Nelson was a former correction officer at MCI-Norfolk.

Mr. Richard Allen Nelson, 78, died on Sunday, June 9, 2013 in the Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston.

Born on January 22, 1935 in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, he was the son of Carl and Isabelle (Hughes) Nelson. Upon completion of Boston Trade High School, Mr. Nelson entered into the United States Navy and served on the USS Northampton. He was a member of the USS Northampton Reunion Association.

He worked as a baker in Boston before he became a correction officer at MCI Norfolk. He was a member of the Correction Officer Union RSCMEA in Boston.

Mr. Nelson has been a resident of Norfolk for the past 50 years moving there from Boston. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, working on puzzles, home improvements, and painting. He enjoyed watching the Patriots, Bruins, and Red Sox. His passion was camping and he was know by many as the “Mayor” of the Summit Hill Campground in Washington, MA.

He was the beloved husband of the late Kathleen (Morin) Nelson, loving father of Laurie E. Nelson and Mary Hartman of Harrisburg, PA, Richard Allen Nelson, Jr. of North Attleboro, Francis C. and his wife Alyson Nelson of Waynesville, NC, Cheryl (Nelson) Taylor of Huntingtown, MD, Donella (Nelson) Donahue of Norton, Stephen T. Nelson of Oxford, and Marjorie J. Nelson and Steve Noonan of North Attleboro. Cherished grandfather of Michael J. Donahue, Gregery R. Donahue, Matthew Taylor, Jeffrey Brassard and Daniel Brassard brother of Shirley E. Gaynor of Brockton, Howard E. Nelson of Middleboro, Linda L. Fleming of Alton, NH, the late George "Bud" Hughes, the late Carl Nelson, and the late Carol A. Fralin.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the funeral service in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common St., Walpole on Friday, June 14, at 11 a.m.. Visiting hours are Thursday, June 13, from 3 -7 p.m.. Interment will be private.
