Obituary: Gardner L. Rett, Accomplished Baseball Player

Gardner L. “Gardie” Rett, 76, of Plainville, formerly of Milford, died Sept. 17, 2013 at Norwood Hospital after an illness.

He was the husband of Terri A. (O’Brien) Rett. 

Mr. Rett was born in Milford, son of the late Louis J. Rett Jr. and the late Lena (Catella) Rett. He attended Milford public schools and was a graduate of Milford High School, Class of 1955. 

Mr. Rett was an accomplished baseball player who was a star member of the high school baseball team as well as the Milford Legion baseball team. He was acknowledged to be, at the age of 15, the youngest baseball player to hit a home run in Fenway Park. He also went on to play for the Cleveland Indians baseball organization, playing in their AAA affiliate. 

Mr. Rett was an avid sportsman and had a great love of animals. He owned and operated his own harness horseracing business for many years. He later worked with the mentally challenged for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and private industry. 

Along with his wife of 42 years, he is survived by his daughter Tiffany and her husband Philip Shea of Plainville; his brother Wayne Rett and his wife Joyce of Milford; and his several nieces and nephews.
