Wrentham To Host Hazardous Waste Day Saturday

Event to receive rigid plastics, styrofoam for the first time.

The Wrentham Department of Public Works and the town Recycling Committee will be holding a hazardous waste day on Saturday, allowing town residents the opportunity to dispose of numerous items safely.

The event will be accepting such items as oil-based paints, paint thinners, kerosene, oil, antifreeze and car batteries. Propane tanks and tires will be accepted with a fee.

Cindy O'Rourke, a member of the Recycling Committee, said the event will take place from 9am to 1pm at the Department of Public Works parking lot.

"We typically hold the event annually, and it usually happens in May," she said. "In the past, we've seen in excess of 200 to 300 residents."

O'Rourke said the event is intended to properly dispose of these hazardous substances.

"We don't want things like mercury ending up in the landfill," she said.

According to O'Rourke, the event will be receiving rigid plastics and styrofoam for the first time.

"We'll be taking things like kids' outdoor toys and outdoor plastic furniture," she said. "We'll also take styrofoam, so that would be things like coffee cups."

She said a donation event for lightly-used items will take place in conjunction with the hazardous waste day. There, organizations like the Salvation Army, Boston Building Resources and Bikes Not Bombs will be accepting donations.

"Boston Building Resources will be collecting reusable household objects... If you replace your faucet, but your old one is still usable, you can donate to them," she said. "The Wrentham Elementary School Trust will be there collecting gently used sports equipment."
