Wrentham Hosts Lions Race for Charity

The Wrentham Lions Club hosted their 11th annual 5K Road Race to celebrate the new year.

The Wrentham Lions Club hosted their 11th annual 5K Road Race this past weekend on New Year's Day.

Runners and onlookers  from all over the Southern New England area gathered at the Eagle Brook Saloon in Norfolk to ring in the New Year. Formerly known as the Hangover Classic, the race is held at varied locations.

This year, the runners were blessed with unseasonably warm weather, but the race has never been canceled, regardless of rain or snow. Ironically, when the weather was uncooperative for the race at Tom's Tavern, the Lions had their best turnout at that point in the race's history; over 120 people signed up.

This year saw the best turnout to date, as 165 runners signed up to help the Lions' many chartable causes and events.

Runners started signing up at around 9:30am, and the race began at 11, with the Norfolk Police holding traffic for the runners at the Eagle Brook.

The race's route varies depending on the starting location. This year's route started on Dedham Street, then turned right onto Pine Street until Route 140, or Foxboro Road. From there, the runners went onto Vine Street and back to Pine.

Each runner walked to the water cooler immediately upon finishing the race. Many went inside Eagle Brook to cash in on their buffet coupons, provided by the Lions.
