Selectmen Grant Conditional License to Proposed Wampum Corner Restaurant

New restaurant to occupy Wampum Corner Drive-Thru building.

The Wrentham Board of Selectmen, at their meeting Tuesday night, granted a conditional license to Commonwealth BBQ, a restaurant set to open later this month.

Restaurateur Christopher Vieira spoke about the project to the board.

"I worked at Ruby Tuesday's, and was one of the original managers at the Wrentham Outlets," he said. "I'm pretty familiar with the area."

Vieira said he had driven by the Wampum Corner location many times, and had been intrigued by the location.

"About a year ago, I was let go," he said. "I had a decision to make — to continue to work for corporate restaurants, or to open up my own."

He said he pursued the Wrentham location, and was able to obtain a five-year lease.

"I'm looking at being here long-term," he said. "We'll be hiring about 25 people locally."

According to Vieira, the building has been completely renovated, with a new electrical system, plumbing and heating.

"I've gone to every board, and seen every supervisor," he said. "It's all up to date, and it's all up to code."

Selectman Michael Carroll indicated concern over the business' proposed 11pm closing time. Vieira assured the board that the building wouldn't play music loudly or otherwise disrupt local residents.

Carroll proposed a condition that any music played at the restaurant not be audible at the property line. The amendment was accepted.

Vieira said he hoped to open on April 20.

"Everybody's been very, very helpful in putting us in the right direction," he said.

The board unanimously approved a conditional license for the business.
