(Possible) Death of the Ding-Dong, Twinkie, Wonder Bread: End of an Era?

Reports are that Hostess is starting to close down after a labor dispute. End of a beloved era, or good riddance to junk food heaven?

Twinkies. Hostess Cupcakes. Wonder Bread. Ding-dongs.

They could be gone forever, with reports that Hostess Brands, Inc., said today that it will sell off or close down its 82-year old business. Done in, says the CEO, by labor union action.

Hostess filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January.

The company has been challenged by not only by snarly labor relations, and a national strike by its second-largest labor union, but also, posits the Wall Street Journal, by consumers switching to healthier foods and high ingredient costs.

But the Journal says that Hostess has threatened liquidation before, and not followed through.

But if it does liquidate, what do you think about this end to a junk-food kingdom? Will you buy some Ding-dongs and Twinkies just for old times' sake? Stock up on them for the future? Watch the beginning of the move 'Wall-E' for the Twinkie-and-cockroach scene one more time? Is it the end of a beloved era? Or is it 'good riddance,' that the world would be better off without so much junk food? Or do you think someone else will buy them up, and we'll have an unending supply of Twinkies? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

I have to agree with Paul. Unions were great many many years ago. However, in this the economy there is no room for unions or greed. There are too many people out of work who would love to have a job right now. Union employees should not feel entitled nor should they feel they are excused from our current fiscal crisis. Unions always think they have the upper hand until now.

I didn't know the unions were to blame for the company's mismanagement. I also never heard of top executives taking a pay cut or a pay increase for the good of a company, but I do always hear the workers are not getting an increase in pay or have to take a pay cut or pay higher benefits. From what I've read, regardless if the company closes, they will be receiving their bonuses and severance package. For those who keep bashing the union, they are the ones who set the pay scale for you to earn what your earning, lets face it, if there were no unions at all, what makes you think you'd be earning what your making now? Companies would only pay you minium wage. For those who think union people are lazy, I'd like to see you work with my husband for a day, you wouldn't last. It's funny, the politicans don't have 401 K's but they have pensions.

True Paul while Brian might be right about the big salaries in Hostess those people are the ones who have invested their money to build a company, and while I agree hard working dedicated employees are losing out it is because of the fat cat Union leaders who are not losing anything from these people losing their jobs! They will continue to be employed Making their bloated salaries on the backs of the worker while putting the blame solely on the companies and taking no responsibility for their misguidings! Shame on them!
