Plainridge Racecourse in Competition for State's Sole Slot License

Plainridge Racecourse in Plainville is now among 10 other entities eyeing a slots parlor license, according to media reports this week.  

The Plainville track filed its application for the license with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission several months ago, according to a report on WHDH, and park president George Carney said that after filing the application, he was confident he could win the competition. 

Developers are proposing to build a 1,250 slot machine parlor at Plainridge Racecourse if the track receives the state’s only slot parlor gaming license. The deadline for developers to submit applications to the Gaming Commission passed on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

Nearly a dozen firms with hopes to compete for licenses for resort casinos or a slots parlor filed applications prior the deadline, as well as a $400,000 application fee, according to WHDH. Among those who filed applications were the following:

• MGM Springfield
• Penn National Gaming, Inc.
• Plainridge Racecourse
• Hard Rock MA
• Wynn, LLC
• Mohegan Sun
• Sterling Suffolk Racecourse (Caesars Entertainment/Suffolk Downs) 

Raynham Park President George Carney is also vying for the slots parlor license with Plainridge, and said after filing his application that he was confident he could win the competition, according to WHDH. Carney partnered with Greenwood Racing, which operates Pennsylvania's largest gambling facility.

Foxborough officials, meanwhile, are keeping an eye on development plans at Plainridge to ensure the town doesn’t miss out on potential mitigation as a neighboring community. 

Foxborough Board of Selectmen Chair James DeVellis invited the state's Gaming Commission to a meeting in February to discuss the town's options as an abutter to the proposed racino at Plainridge.
