The program will be held on Sunday mornings, from 9-10 a.m., at the Sweatt fields adjacent to the Wrentham Public Library.

Program leader Chip Walkrer describes rugby as the safe alternative to Football for high energy kids who crave continuous fast moving action in a fun and team oriented environment. All boys and girls participate and all are fully engaged throughout the game.

Football is derived from rugby and is now played all over the world. Two sides of 15 players, (7 backs and 8 forwards) try to advance an oval ball down the field for a touchdown (5 points) and an extra 2 points for a kick between the posts. Unlike Football, the action is continuous. There is no blocking, and the ball can only be passed backwards.

Under  Walker’s coaching, and under the guidance of the Massachusetts Youth Rugby Association, the Wrentham Rec program involves a 30 minute skills training session on the basic rules, ball handling, passing, and kicking followed by a 30 minute game of Flag Rugby.
