GOP and Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate debated Wednesday night at the Channel 5 studios in Needham.
In the days leading up to the first Democratic U.S. Senate debate, U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) has been called upon frequently to explain the vote he took against the health care reform bill in 2010. Wednesday night, Lynch and U.S. Rep. Ed Markey (D-Malden) went several rounds on the topic. They faced-off for 30 minutes at the Channel 5 studios in Needham following a contest among the three declared Republican candidates. Five candidates seeking the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by John Kerry will debate for the first time in one place Wednesday night in Needham. The two Democrats and three Republicans vying for the vacated position will face each other in two separate, 30-minute debates in an event sponsored by the Boston Media Consortium and held at the Channel 5 studios. The debate will air live from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will be moderated by R.D. Sahl. Patch will be among the media organizations covering the event. The primary election is April 30. With Wrentham moving its annual town election to April 30, Tuesday was the last day to take out and return nomination papers for the annual election. April 30 will also be the Massachusetts US Senate primary. George R. Smith Jr. took out papers to run for the open selectmen's seat Monday and returned well them before the 5 p.m. deadline, according to town clerk Carol A. Mollica. That meant the only contested race will be the two seats on the board of selectmen. Incumbents Joseph Botaish, 54 Hamilton Rd. and Gail Pratt, 316 Taunton St. will be challenged by Smith, who lives at 405 Bennett St.

United States Senate candidate Dan Winslow will be releasing his tax returns for the last 10 years.
Republican Senate candidate Dan Winslow, a state representative from Norfolk, released his earnings and the federal tax rate he paid from 2003 to 2011, according to a report in the Boston Globe. He also promised to release his tax returns for the last 10 years next week. “Throughout my campaign I will endeavor to promote openness, clarity of opinion, and transparency,” Winslow said in a statement. “In this condensed election cycle we owe it to the voter to be forthright about our views and our financial records so that when they go to the polls they have adequate information to make an informed choice. In 2010 and 2011, Winslow said he earned more than $500,000 a year, working as a state representative and as a trial lawyer.

A UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll shows he is in a strong position to run in 2014.
Results of a UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll this week show former Senator Scott Brown is more popular than he was when he lost his re-election bid last fall and is in a strong position to run for Governor in 2014. The independent, nonpartisan poll surveyed 600 Massachusetts registered voters between Saturday, March 2 and Tuesday, March 5. With regard to Brown, the poll – which asked voters for their opinions on whether they would vote for Brown if he runs for governor – showed he has considerable bipartisan support, with 32.7 percent saying they are very likely to vote for him and 26 percent somewhat likely. Results showed that Brown, who garnered support of 92.2 percent of Republicans polled and 36.7 percent of Democrats, had more name …

Two Democrats and three Republicans submitted the needed 10,000 names.
Three Republicans and two Democrats submitted the required number of signatures to run in the special election for U.S. Senate, according to the Boston Globe. U.S. Reps. Edward Markey (D-Malden) and Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) each filed more than double the 10,000 certified signatures required. Markey led the way with nearly 34,000 signatures, while Lynch had just over 25,000. On the Republican side, former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan filed nearly 19,000 signatures, followed by former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset at almost 17,000 and state Rep. Daniel Winslow of Norfolk at more than 13,000. Those totals only include those signatures submitted to the Secretary of State's office by Wednesday's 5 p.m. deadline. City and town …

There will be one less Norfolk resident in the race in the Massachusetts special Senate election to replace Secretary of State John Kerry. Republican Sean Bielat said Wednesday, while he thought he could run a strong campaign, that the timing wasn't right for running this time, according to an Associated Press report. Previously, he had run twice for Congress against Barney Frank and Joe Kennedy III, who he lost to in November. Norfolk state representative Dan Winslow is a candidate for the Republican nomination as is Cohasset businessman Gabriel Gomez. Former US Attorney Michael Sullivan is considering running. Bielat sought donations to run this weekend and filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission.

Since winning a special election in 2010 to succeed Scott Brown as state senator, Wrentham resident Richard Ross has had his term renewed twice without opposition. This will not be repeated for the Republican in 2014 because at least one other person would like to represent the Norfolk, Bristol and Middlesex District. Attleboro City Councilor Sara-Lynn Reynolds, who two weeks ago changed her voter registration status from independent to Democratic, said Tuesday that she will run in the election.
