Wrentham Elementary Schools Announce WEST Grants
Schools receive grants to supplement education.
The Wrentham Elementary Schools Trust has announced the recipients of over $10,000 worth of grants this year.
Elementary Schools Superintendent Jeffrey Marsden said the program, also called WEST, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation that began three years ago.
"It's run by parents, who do things like put on fundraisers," he said. "Over the last couple of years, they've given out around $42,000 in grants to teachers."
The following grants were announced:
- Open Circle Literature: $1,000
- Revolutionary Wrentham: $798
- Homeschool Partnership to Promote Literacy: $2,000
- Bringing Nature into the Classroom: $1,005
- Matching Readers with Just Right Books: $987
- Take-Home Math Bags: $422
- Circling Around Great Books: $2,500
- Project Read-Written Expression: $795
- Vernal Pool Waders: $1,075
According to Marsden, grants awarded in previous years have contributed to the educational experience of the students.
"In the last year, we've put in a climbing wall in the gym, which is something the physical education department wanted," he said. "We've also put a weather bug on the Roderick School."
That project, Marsden said, allows teachers to help students graph weather trends, assisting in science education.
"There's also been a lot of smaller things that really enrich the kids' educational experience," he said. "It's really a great group."
