WEST Improves Wrentham Elementary Instruction

A look at a local group that raises funds for education.

The Wrentham Elementary Schools Trust provides grants to the local elementary schools in an effort to supplement the education of students.

The trust recently granted over $10,000 to various projects in the district.

Audra Kennedy, the president of WEST, said the group was established in 2007.

"It's governed by a board of directors, and is made up of parent volunteers," she said. "A couple of our directors also sit on the elementary school committee."

The group, she said, accepts grant applications from local teachers twice a year.

"They apply in December or May," she said. "We then go through the applications, and determine which projects should receive grants."

According to Kennedy, the trust was started by Superintendent Jeffrey Marsden, who brought the idea over from his previous school system.

"A small group of us came together," she said. "We're a small but mighty force."

Previously, the trust has funded such projects as a climbing wall and a weather station on the roof of the Roderick School.

Kennedy said much of the group's efforts are focused around fundraising, which it does throughout the year.

"We don't like to sell anything," she said. "We have a comedy night, as well as a golf ball drop."

The golf ball drop, she said, occurs on Wrentham Day. Townspeople are invited to "purchase" a golf ball, which is then dropped by the town fire chief from the top of a fire engine. She said the ball closest to a pin is the winner.

The group is currently looking for corporate sponsors.

"We're trying to get the burden off of the same small group of people," Kennedy said.
