Recreation Department Prepares for Wrentham Day
With a week and a half to go before the annual event, the Recreation Department is preparing to make Wrentham Day a success.
What initially started as an arts and crafts fair has today turned into one of the most popular events of the year. Once again, the town will come together on September 8 for the annual Wrentham Day celebration at the Wrentham Common.
“Wrentham Day is a day for the whole community to come out and check out all of the displays that we have on,” Recreation Director Jeff Plympton said. “I think for years it’s been a lot more of an arts and crafts thing then it sort of transform itself into a lot arts and crafts still but more high end stuff then community groups came out explaining what they do.”
The day, which brings the town together, features a variety of events designed to create an event for the whole family to enjoy. The day will include booths from local town groups, sports groups, and even the fire department to promote their organizations and show what they have been up to.
“It’s a good community day for people to come out and have a nice day. Typically everyone from the town comes out and enjoys it and there’s the music going on, we got the Wrentham WRoad Race going on so there’s a lot of things happening,” Plympton said.
The day will start at 8:30 a.m. when signup for the WRoad Race opens up. With the starting gun going off at 10 a.m., the course takes runners from Wrentham Common, up Taunton Street, and back towards the common. Despite being a small race, the 5K has taken up a quality over quantity aspect.
“We’ve had some pretty good runs in the past years. The real surprise is some runners that are sub 5:00 mile which is pretty good,” Plympton said. “It seems like a pretty good course but when it goes out it’s a little bit uphill. On the way back it’s pretty much gliding home.”
Last year’s winner crossed the finish line at 15:33, running a 5:01 mile pace during the race.
As always the Lions’ Club will be providing the banana split starting at 2 p.m. along with the EyeMobile until 3 p.m.
Wrentham Youth Baseball and Softball will also be at the common providing hot dogs, burgers, and sausages. Firefighters will once again be selling clam chowder all day.
Wrentham Day runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be a variety of live music playing in the gazebo throughout the day.
