KP Boys Hockey Struggles Against Nauset

The Warriors lost 3-0 to Nauset Regional High School.

Over the past two games, the King Philip Warriors have gotten off 85 shots.

Conventional wisdom says that when you average over 40 shots over two games, then goals must not be an issue. That has not been the case for KP, who have only managed to score three goals on those shots. Playing against the Nauset High School Warriors, KP was able to outshoot Nauset 30-17 but fell 3-0.

“They [Nauset] took advantage of the good opportunities that they had, and that’s what happens in games like this,” King Philip head coach Mark Homer said.

Nauset struck with their first goal 6:20 into the opening period with a shot from the low left by Cam McPartland with the assist coming from Adam Huber.

King Philip had a pair of power plays in the first period but couldn’t get anything past Nauset. With tough defense down low, KP struggled to find shots in the slot and around the net.

“We gotta find a way to create better offense down low. We’ll keep working at it,” Homer said.

The second goal for Nauset came only 2:12 into the second period, when Connor Martin’s slap shot from the far right found the top left corner of the goal to give KP another setback.

KP’s Gavin MacIntyre had a chance to cut the lead late in the second when he rushed up the ice but could only find the left post to keep KP scoreless.

With the puck floating towards the KP zone, McPartland was able to beat KP to it to get a chance for his second goal of the night. While KP goalie Tanner Jensen stopped McPartland’s shot, Huber was there for the rebound to give Nauset their third and final goal at 4:56 of the third period.

It was a rough night for a team that had no problem getting shots off but let Nauset take advantage of the few opportunites that they had.

“Its all about preparation. You come to the rink, you have to get ready and I think that’s part of the maturity of the program to understand that you’re not in the state tournament but you still got a lot to play for,’ Homer said.

The loss gives KP a record of 5-11-2.

The KP Warriors will have their final Hockomock League game of the season on February 18 when they host their league crossover game. Their Davenport Division opponent is to be announced later this week. Face-off is set for 7:10pm.
